Decongestant Nettle Tea Recipe for Coughs and Colds
Nettle tea is an excellent remedy for coughs, colds and congestion. Not only does it provide a much needed boost to the immune system, it also delivers a large dose of iron and other essential nutrients to the body.
Sufferer’s of colds and allergies will find this nettle tea recipe a huge relief of symptoms including dripping sinuses, head and chest congestion, excess mucus, coughs and sore throats. Nettle tea can afford these benefits without drying out the sinus cavities, as many over-the-counter products do.
The other herbs used in this formula increase the tea’s healing properties and the peppermint leaves, licorice and ginger root create a refreshing taste.
Yield: 4 cups
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 1/8 cup dried nettle leaves
- 1/8 cup dried peppermint leaves
- 1/8 cup dried sage leaves
- 4 tbsp. freshly grated ginger root
- 1 tsp. licorice root
- Honey (optional)
Directions:
- Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan.
- Combine all of the herbs in a separate pan or tea kettle.
- Pour the water over the herbs and allow the mixture to steep for 10-15 minutes.
- Serve immediately and sweeten individual servings with honey, if desired.
Tips and Variations:
To make a smaller single serving of this nettle tea, use 1/2 tsp. each dried nettle leaves, dried peppermint leaves and dried sage leaves. Use 1/8 tsp. ginger root and licorice root. Combine the herbs and pour 1 cup of boiling water over them. Allow the nettle tea to steep for 10-15 minutes, sweeten with honey and serve immediately.
This nettle tea recipe yields a brew that is suitable for drinking hot or cold. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container, if necessary, and consume within two days of brewing for the best results. Make sure to sweeten just before you drink the tea, and not before storing.
Dosage:
Drink up to 4 cups of decongestant nettle tea per day, as needed.
Always consult your doctor before taking nettle if you are taking prescription medications. Nettle may drop the blood-pressure, so do not ingest nettle tea if you’re on blood-pressure lowering medications.
