How to Make Nettle Tea: Recipe

Nettle tea can be a powerful part of an overall health regimen, or it can be used to treat specific conditions. However you use it, nettle tea is easy to make at home from dried nettle leaves.
If you have nettle tea bags, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results. This nettle tea recipe is only applicable if you’re beginning with the dried leaves. This brew will deliver nutrients to the system and impart all of the wonderful nettle tea benefits to the consumer.
Many people compare the taste of nettle tea to hay. It is mild and refreshing, with no bitter undertones. Sweetened, it has a very nice taste, but many enjoy it without any added sweetener as well.
Yield: 1 (8 oz.) serving
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp. dried nettle leaves
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp. honey or sugar (optional)
Directions:
- Bring one cup of water to a boil over medium-high heat in a small saucepan.
- Meanwhile, place the dried nettle leaves into a heat-proof container, such as a coffee mug.
- Pour the boiling water over the herbs and cover the container with a small saucer.
- Allow the nettle tea to steep for 15 to 20 minutes. During this time, all of the vitamins and nutrients present in the nettle leaves will be released into the water.
- Remove the saucer from the heat-proof container, and then strain the tea through a fine-mesh strainer into a second clean coffee mug. Discard the spent leaves in the compost bin or trash can.
- Add the honey or sugar, if desired, mix well and drink immediately.
Tips:
- Use spring or distilled water to make nettle tea, if possible. Tap water often contains harmful chemicals such as chlorine. Allowing tap water to sit in the open air overnight will evaporate these contaminants, if it must be used.
- Nettle tea is equally good warm or cold. Make a large batch and refrigerate the leftovers, if desired. A large glass of iced nettle tea can be quite refreshing on a hot summer day.
Variations:
To make a stronger nettle tea, more akin to an infusion, place 2 to 3 tbsp. dried nettle leaves into a quart-sized Mason jar. Fill the jar with boiling water, secure the lid in place and allow the mixture to sit overnight. Sweeten and drink in the morning for a burst of energy and nutrients.
